Gretchen + Jason
Gretchen and Jason’s love story from How He Asked starts with a tragic accident while Gretchen was going for a run. Jason and Gretchen had not yet met when Gretchen was hit by a car. That was when Jason first heard of her. Gretchen and Jason were in a lot of the same circles in college and had many mutual friends, but had not crossed paths. Jason, however, decided to change that after hearing about a tragic accident, a fantastic recovery, and an even greater girl. “Since that moment, my interest grew. I honestly had no idea why; I had met plenty of women throughout my college experience, and this was a girl I only heard about through mutual friends, yet for some reason, I had this persistent feeling that I needed to meet her” Jason tells How He Asked. So he did. After a rough first date, he wooed her with his beautiful singing voice, and the couple begin seeing each other. Evening walks around campus, Christmas ornament painting, and coffee and dessert were just the beginning of a beautiful story. Gretchen tells How He Asked, “Despite my hesitation, I took my friend…up on an offer to go see Jason perform in a campus talent show. I wasn’t sure entirely how I felt about him, but I still went. I had no idea what to expect, but when I heard Jason’s voice while singing, my interest grew. I am a singer myself, so this was extremely attractive to me that he could sing so well. I also love Christmas music, so the fact that he was singing Christmas songs, and was singing them so well was a double whammy. At that point, I knew I wanted to explore getting to know Jason further.”
Jason continues the story, “I had known that Gretchen was ‘the one’ long before I started planning for the proposal. Even during some of our hardest times, I still had that assurance that I was going to spend the rest of my life with this woman.” Jason decided to take his proposal to the next level by picking up a new skill. Knowing how much his girlfriend loved the piano, Jason began learning one of their favorite songs on the piano. He enlisted the help of a few friends, and got Gretchen to a park where she found him there playing their song on an instrument she didn’t know he could play. So romantic! “I cried and smiled and laughed the whole way through while Jason was playing and singing the song. I had about fifty emotions hit me all at once. After the song ended, Jason said a lot of things that I don’t remember (I was still in shock). Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was the easiest and best yes” Gretchen says. Karlie + Dale
Dale and Karlie are both landscape photographers from Australia. That being said, you know their proposal images are going to be good! Dale and Karlie (or DK Photography) create astounding images of some of the most beautiful places you’ve ever seen. But the photo that has garnered one of the biggest responses is an image of themselves as Dale got down on one knee to ask Karlie to be his wife. It was a little bit of a bumpy road getting to their engagement. Dale had it all planned out and bought a ring to propose in the Arctic Circle. He hid the ring in their luggage in a bottle of moisturizer. However, when the luggage was overweight, Karlie decided that the moisturizer wasn’t going to make the cut and threw it out. Ring and all. Dale tells The Daily Mail, “I didn’t know until a week…after, when we were in Iceland and I was looking everywhere for the ring, I asked her where the moisturizer was and she told me she threw it out in the airport.” Needless to say the proposal got postponed as Dale saved for another ring and planned another engagement. Dale and Karlie had chased the Northern Lights together and photographed them many times, but Karlie had no idea what was coming when Dale took her to chase those gorgeous lights again 9 months later. Dale tried to convince Karlie to take a selfie (a photographer’s version – not the kind I take with my arm stretched out and my cracked Iphone front-facing camera pointing at myself). He began to set up to take the picture while Karlie tried to convince him to move on to get shots without people in them, but Dale wasn’t having it. “It was the most amazing display of colour in the Aurora that we’ve ever seen, I wanted to take full opportunity and make it happen at its absolute best. The moment was right, it felt good, so why not,” he tells The Daily Mail. What came of this delayed proposal was utter perfection.
Natalie + Jonathan
Natalie and Jonathan are both big lovers of all things Disney, so a Disney World proposal couldn’t have been more perfect! Jonathan began planning a trip for both his family and Natalie’s to Orlando. They were pretty open about their engagement so Natalie knew he was planning to ask in Orlando but didn’t know when. She planned to get all dressed up for the big moment at a dinner, but she had no idea what was in store. Their first day in Disney World Natalie was approached by a woman she did not know. The woman called her by name and gave her a rose and scroll.
“I quickly opened the scroll and inside was a picture of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, a picture of Jonathan and I, and instructions signed by ‘Belle’. The instructions stated that Belle and the Beast were trying to leave us a message but had to hide the clues with roses hidden in the Magic Kingdom because the villains were trying to destroy the message. The villains had enchanted the roses with a spell and if I were unable to find all the roses the message would be lost forever. I didn’t know what was going on, but I began to start the scavenger hunt. Each rose I found had a picture memory of times I had spent with Jonathan in our 5 years together, and clues leading around the park.” she tells How He Asked. The last rose led Natalie to Cinderella’s Castle where Natalie found her final clue. She was instructed to wear a blindfold, was sprinkled with pixie dust, and then removed the blindfold to Jonathan on his knee with a ring in hand. “I immediately burst into tears, hugged him and answered ‘YES!'” she says. Anna + Adam
Anna and Adam’s proposal story had to be included. I’ve mentioned before that I’m obsessed with anything whimsical, specifically hot air balloons, so their proposal was right up my alley. Anna and Adam met in one of the most interesting ways – on the set for a music video for Imagine Dragons’ “On Top of the World.” They had both entered to be extras in the video and when Adam realized their outfits matched, he introduced himself. Anna tells How He Asked, “He walked up to me and the first thing he said was ‘hey we match, I think that means we are supposed to stand next to each other in the video.’ Kind of cheesy I know, but I fell for it.” They spent the rest of the day goofing off and having fun together.
After dating for awhile they decided to get engaged, and Anna patiently waited to start planning her wedding. She was surprised to come home to a brand new outfit lying on her bed with instructions to be ready and meet Adam the next morning. Anna tells the story, “The next morning, I met Adam at the hotel and he surprised me with a box of my favorite chocolate donuts and a Hot Air Balloon ride! We were accompanied by two journalists who were doing a piece on aviation so it was a little awkward, but exciting nonetheless. At the highest point on the ride, our song: On Top of the World started playing out of the journalist’s backpack. Adam got down and pulled out my red Valentino shoes I ordered months earlier for our wedding, and on the bottom it said, ‘Marry Me?’.” She said yes, of course, and the “journalists” got the entire proposal on video. When they landed, Anna’s family was there to greet them with brunch. “It was so special! I am so lucky to get to marry the most amazing man.” Visit their story on How He Asked to see the video!
Jamie + Brian
Brian gave Jamie a proposal story we can all dream about. Where better to get engaged than in Paris! On a gorgeous fall day in a Parisian September, Brian asked Jamie to be his partner for life. “We decided to take a walk and ended in Champs De Mars with the back drop of the Eiffel Tower. I have never in my life felt more spoiled. Not only was I taken to the most romantic city in the world, but I was promised a present everyday of our trip. It was there in that park that Brian decided to give me one of my presents. He pulled out from his backpack a giant envelope titled the ‘white envelope project'” Jamie tells French Wedding Style. At the start of their relationship, Jamie and Brian decided to start “the white envelope project.” They would write each other a letter throughout their relationship to show how their feelings for each other changed and grew. At his proposal, Brian gave his letter to Jamie detailing his feelings for her throughout their relationship and ending in asking for her hand. He had her read it aloud (I would never be able to make it through a letter like that without becoming a teary mess!).
“I became the luckiest woman in the world that day. I never dreamed anyone could be so romantic. Brian spent months preparing to make that week as special as it was. He thought of every detail, including hiring Juliane Berry to take our engagement pictures” Jamie says. “The experience and the photographs will be forever treasured!”
